Smitten Production Ramps Up

Smitten harvest at CMI Orchards has started, with an anticipated 400% in production over last season.

Retail demand for the variety has exceeded the company’s expectations, vice president of marketing for CMI Orchards George Harter said in a release.

Smitten is one of the top 15 branded apples in the U.S., Harter said.

The high amount of interest from across the U.S. and Canada proves consumers are open to trying new varieties and new flavors in their apples,

“We are already projecting an additional 75% increase next season,” said Don Zornes, Smitten marketing director at Wenatchee, Wash.-based Honey Bear Tree Fruit Co., which also grows Smitten.

CMI plans to sample the Smitten and other apples at the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit Oct. 19-21 in New Orleans, at booth No. 4645.
